Greetings everyone. I am somewhat new here I joined this group earlier, but my post didnt show up. I have an organic nursery raising native plants, a backyard habitat, and organic vegetable garden. I love growing things from seed. Our organic vegetable garden is on its third summer coming up, and is a work in progress.We live in the South Jersey Pinelands where are soil is sand, beach-like in many areas, and very acidic. By composting our winter vegetable scraps even over the first winter, we were able to really enrich the soil and had lots of worms. So many I jokingly thought of starting a baitshop. We do drip irrigation which saves water and keep plants healthier. Last summer we installed it, there was no powdery mildew, and no pests and a much higher crop yield than the year before. I recommend it for all gardens.

I look forward to reading all your comments and learning more about organic vegetable gardens.

My dad used a mix of garlic powder, dish soap and water to keep the pests away. I plan on using this same method unless someone wants to give me new ideas. I'm all ears. smile

Your Dad's mix is pretty good.
I would use some of my own soap instead of store=bought dish soap, because it is earth-friendly and not a detergent.

Did that work for the Grasshoppers? That seems to be my biggest problem. If I can get a plant through the first year here in Texas, it will usually make it and come back every year. But the grasshoppers are a challenge. The only thing I've found that helps so far is NoLo Bait. It stops them from reproducing, but my yard is at least an acre and NoLo Bait is expensive so can't treat the whole yard. Have to just put it around the plants and keep vigilant watch.

How are your organic gardens coming along ?

I have very busy getting the gardens ready, making extra soaps, perfumes, balms... for a BIG show I have been invited to attend at the end of May, and of course I hav been hand-sewing several more of my eye mask/pillows and neck pillows with sachets to match.

I am trying to have a bunch of everything for the show AND restock my B&M store as well as my 2 online stores.

Whew, I'm getting worn out - LOL

I have been looking through my seed catalogs and so wishing that I had about 10 more acres and 6 helpers too - LOL

Baker Creek Seeds has great prices and most improtantly only carries non-GMO (Genetically Modified Organism)seeds which are heirloom varieties.

I think their website is www.rareseeds.com

I save my own seeds whenever I can because the non GMO are getting harder to find and when I eat corn, I ONLY want to have corn in it not the genes of other plants or even animals - be wary folks soy and corn are the most genetically altered crops out there and it is spreading !

Thanks diana, I'm off to check that website and look at their seeds. I used to have a 40 ft. x 10 ft. garden, but it got to be too much for me so I now just have a small raised garden, but I can always make another one. And I've been looking for some heirloom seed varieties to try.

Hi,

My name is Raven, and I am a newbie here and sqaw this group and wantred to join right away. I dont see any other threads or where to start a new one, so I added to this one.

I love anything organic, natural, gereen oriented, recycled. I grow organically raised native plants in my nursery, which I have for sale, but I also like growinfg my own organic vegetables, which saves me $$ at the store. I also like to make things from garbage, I am always looking at things that go in the trash at work, thinking, what can I use this for? This looks like a great group and I am glad to be here. Also Thank you to all who added me a a friend on my fiesat day before I was even set up. I look forward to exchanging green ideas with yous.

Over this cold Winter is a good time to be planning your gardens.
Take out a notebook or drawing pad and jot down notes about what kinds of things you want to grow and where you might like them to be.

Make sure you check on the prpoer growing conditions for the plants and for your area.

It is possible to push the envelope a little with what you can grow if you are careful.
Even within your own yard, sometimes you can have micro climates that allow you to grow something that you shouldn't be able to in your area.

We can use the shelter of our house/shed/garage/taller plants/trees/... to give protection to more delicate plants and this might let us grow them even when the zone limit is borderline for us.
I am in zone 5 and I have been able to grow many zone 6 crops using mulch/sheltered spots/other plants as protection from wind... .
There are many tricks to help us, BUT learn the proper methods first because even then - success is not assured.
I do not want anyone to try to push the limits right off the bat and then give up - thinking that they cannot do well at organic gardening.

After you have figured out the basics, go for it and have fun experimenting !

Hello all, I joined the other day but didn't get a chance to say hi.

I think this will be a great group. I just recently attended a work shop that the Philadelphia water department gave where they gave out rain barrels.

So many homes have flat roofs in our city and having rain barrels is really a great way to conserve water and to keep from flooding our waterways in a storm. Do any of you have rain barrels?

I save rain water too and use it to water my gardens - that is when the frogs are mating in it.
For 2 years, I had a frog family living in one of my rain barrels so I didn't use that one. Good thing I have several of them.
I want to have a REAL pond one day, I guess they didn't want to wait on hubby to get it doen - LOL

Okay, I made a newsletter and I have the first 2 pages working the way they should - I think - LOL

But the 3rd page that signals success will not work as I wanted. The one that comes up is ugly and plain white, but at least it works so I will use it
